The Story

Carol Crawford-Smith, is a single mother and dance instructor who was dealt a cruel and devastating blow five years ago when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Once a soloist with the internationally-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem, Crawford-Smith had to painfully navigate her old split level home with a walker. Though she is still the artistic director of The Center of Dance in Blacksburg, which she founded in 1994, Crawford-Smith can no longer demonstrate the dance moves she envisions. Even the short trek to and from the downtown-Blacksburg second floor dance studio had become a journey of labor and frustration.

Showing true community spirit, her neighbors sent a video application to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They wanted to give her a home that could meet her needs and maybe make life a little easier. The show’s producers were touched by Carol Crawford-Smith, her story, her perseverance, and the community she lives in.

Because of their reputation for quality construction and community commitment, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition contacted Building Specialists to give Carol one of the best gifts she has ever received; a new house. Despite knowing that this project was under strict time constraints and was to be performed without compensation, Building Specialists still did not hesitate to volunteer their services. Building Specialists designers teamed up with Virginia Tech to create a schematic house design overnight and fully develop the details within three weeks. In the meantime, the BSI preconstruction team organized a group of subcontractors and vendors and ordered panelized walls, trusses, doors, windows, and every other building product needed to construct a house from the ground up. The twist was that the materials were needed within two weeks and the house had to be constructed in under five days. Building Specialists, over 300 subcontractors, and more than 4,000 volunteers endured frigid temperatures, ice storms, and snow to construct a house for the Crawford-Smith family. Despite delays, the team pulled together and finished the project just in time for the family to come home.
