In late February 2008, Roanoke experienced a very strong wind storm creating damage around the city. Building Specialists, Inc. (BSI) was called to the home of Mark McConnel and Helene Dreiling where a huge oak tree had fallen into their home. The roof had sustained the majority of the damage. BSI replaced all slate across the front elevation and standing seam metal roof over the master bedroom. Repairs were made to a bathroom, damaged skylights in the master bedroom were replaced, and plaster in the master closet and bedroom closet were repaired. Masonry repairs were needed on the front corner of the house from damage sustained from the tree's impact.
The initial goal was to stabilize the home from further weather damage and the cold temperatures of winter. The weight and force of the tree caused brick masonry to buckle away from the garage, a concrete slab to shift and plaster throughout the backside of the home to crack. Part of the challenge was matching the slate roof which, due to elevation, was a dominate feature of the home. BSI worked with the homeowners and the insurance company in locating a Buckingham slate product that retained this critical feature on this beautiful home.
