How long have you been in business?

Building Specialists has successfully operated since 1975.

Can you provide other references and can we tour some of your work?

We are extremely proud of our work and have hundreds of satisfied customers. We would be more than happy to provide you with a list of customers and line up tours of our past projects.

What services do you provide?

We are a full-service design/build firm for residential projects. We offer turn-key completion of custom projects large and small. We provide design services with exclusive reduced fees through several local architects. If you have a design ready, we will gladly perform only the construction of the project. We will even clean your house and wash your windows at the end of the project (dog-sitting available at an additional cost).

What geographic areas do you work in?

We work within a 100-mile radius of the Roanoke Valley. This includes the New River Valley, Salem, New Castle, Natural Bridge, Lexington, Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake and everything in between.

I don’t live near by. How will I keep up with the construction?

We work with many clients long distance. We will happily connect through the technology of your choice to share photographs or videos of the work. Depending on your schedule, we can establish conference calls or video meetings so there is always a face-to-face connection with the project.

Do you give free estimates?

Our initial consultation is free. If design services are required in order to price accurately, there may be an additional charge depending upon the scope of your project. We will discuss further about that on our first visit once we have had a chance to see the extent of your needs.

Will there be a contract for the work?

Yes, all projects will have a written contract before the first swing of the hammer.

How do I pay for my project?

If you need financing, we deal with local lending institutions frequently and would be glad to refer you. We are also familiar with historic preservation grants and tax credits, which may be available to you depending upon where you live. Ask us for more information.

Is your work guaranteed?

We provide a one-year warranty on all workmanship. Many products that we use have longer warranties.

How much does it cost per square foot to build an addition?

That’s a difficult question to answer because many factors can affect the cost of your project, including its size, complexity, accessibility, and quality of finishes that you choose. We can give you a better idea after we meet and discuss your project.

Do we have to move out of our home for renovations?

It really depends on your project and if the scope of work allows us to safely cordon off our work. We can discuss options during our initial meeting.

Are you insured, licensed and bonded?

We are licensed by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, State Board for Contractors, as a Class A building contractor, meaning that we can construct buildings of any size or cost. We are fully insured for general liability and workers compensation and a copy of our insurance certificate outlining our coverage will be provided prior to construction. Although not common on residential projects, we can provide performance, labor and material payment bonds if requested.

Are you a member of any professional associations? Do you mind if we check with the Better Business Bureau?

We have been members of the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association for over 35 years. As a former board member of the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia, we recommend that you check out every business you are considering dealing with through the BBB. I have seen your signs on office buildings. Do you also do commercial work?

We have a separate commercial division that renovates and builds offices, stores, and light commercial facilities. Residential work has always been a great passion of ours and is a large part of our business. So, the answer to that question is yes, we do both. If you are also a business owner, please keep us in mind for commercial projects as well.
