Update a 1930 vintage Tudor home (with plenty of character) for an active couple’s busy lifestyle by recreating features from their previous contemporary-styled home while incorporating “universal design” features for when the owners are no longer as mobile.
Bring the house into the twentieth century with two additions: a large kitchen/sitting room and enlarged dining room on the left side of the house and a master bedroom on the rear of the house. Each addition boasts tall, vaulted ceilings with openings into the second floor studio/office, recalling the contemporary space of their previous home. To maintain the charm of the tudor, textured plaster finishes, hardwood flooring and half-timbering were carefully matched. Brick was painstakingly removed from the left side of the house, cleaned and re-used on the exposed facades for a seamless look. The owners want to stay in their new home as long as possible, so the house incorporates “universal design” features (originally for those with limited mobility, but now incorporated into designs for all ages), such as one-floor living, handicapped clearances around bathroom fixtures, and 36-inch doors with lever handles.
